The Effect of MC-Type Carbides on the Microstructure and Wear Behavior of S390 High-Speed Steel Produced via Spark Plasma Sintering

The microstructure and wear behavior of S390 high-speed steel (HSS) reinforced with different volume fractions MC-type carbides produced via spark plasma sintering were investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) transmission (TEM) in this study. SEM TEM results show that V-W-rich are formed around the added carbides, these have a similar composition to M(C, N) precipitated at high temperatures according thermodynamic calculations. Both macrohardness three-point bending carbide type is dominant factor increasing hardness, fraction leading decrease strength. mechanism HSS metal matrix composites (MMCs) confirmed as abrasive oxidative tracks oxidation films. Compared sample without reinforcement (85 HRA, coefficient 1.50 × 10−15 m2/N), best MT-3 exhibits hardness increase 1.8 HRA three-fold resistance.
